  1. I have to say I was pretty hesitant to read "another" book about WWII/the Holocaust. I am glad however I did my book club duty and dug in. It was so sad to read the endnotes when Irene was killed, then her husband, how her daughters barely survived due to the kindness of friends, only to be turned away by their grandmother ("if your parents are dead go to an orphanage"). How outrageously human beings can act!

I enjoyed Irene's writing and weaving of the various stories together. My favorite subplot was the bank employee couple with the lost son who were reunited after all. But I really cannot get over the heartbreaking real life drama behind the "fiction."
